How to paint a basic rosebud - three strokes

a rosebud painting lesson

Mix three shades of a color. Example: dark red, medium pink,
pink-tinted white.

1st stroke - Double load a #6 flat brush. To double load, load the brush with the dark shade and brush on the palette to move the paint evenly through the brush. Then dip one corner in the off white paint. Brush again on the palette to blend and make the first stroke shown on the top of the chart.

Tip: If the paint does not move easily, it may not be the correct consistency.
Thin it just a bit.

Reload the brush and go over the stroke again for better coverage. The 2nd and 3d strokes - wipe the brush and double load with the medium and the light colors. Add the calyx and stem with thinned green paint using a liner brush. For a simple leaf, load the brush with a medium green and stroke one side of the leaf, pressing down at the start and lifting the brush at the end of the stroke. Double load the brush with medium green and a light green for the other side of the leaf.

The greenery background should be applied to the surface before starting to paint the design. Use an old worn brush and lightly dab in some color.

These strokes are very easy but they do take a lot of practice, practice, practice until you feel comfortable with them. There are many patterns available using the basic brush stroke.
