PAINTING TIPS FOR BEGINNING LANDSCAPE ARTISTS

SKIES IN A LANDSCAPE PAINTING
by a lundy

A painting of a sky in a landscape

Here are a few painting tips on skies in a landscape painting.
When objects are in the far distance, they appear misty. The edges seem to merge and they tend to take on a tinge of a faded bluish color. Think of distant objects as being seen through a misty atmosphere. Similarly, the color of the sky is stronger overhead than it is far away and it, too, takes on a lighter appearance in the far distance, which is the horizon.

Follow the instructions below and practice painting a sky to better understand this concept - a way to get the effect of distance in a landscape painting.

SUPPLIES FOR THE FOLLOWING ART LESSON

8" x 10" canvas panel - Palette - Palette knife - Size 10 or 12 flat brush -
Paper towels
Acrylic tube paint - White - Cerulean Blue - Yellow Ochre -
Cadmium Red Light
A spray bottle of water if paint on the palette starts to dry. - Small container
for water

Use the palette knife, add a touch of water so the paint will move easily,
and mix the following:

Mix 1 - White + Cerulean Blue - Mix 2- White + Touch of Yellow Ochre
- an offwhite color
Mix 3- Touch of Cadmium Red Light + White + Mix 1

With the #10 or #12 bristle brush, apply Mixture 1 with criss cross strokes across an 8" edge for a vertical picture. Continue for 2 inches. Wipe the
brush to remove most of the paint and pick up some of mixture 2 with the
dirty brush. Continue by brushing into the bottom inch of the painted area,
blending the colors, for another inch, blending and fading toward the horizon.
Lightly brush a few horizontal strokes of Mixture 3. Painting into the wet
distant sky will soften the edges of the mountains and add to the appearance of distance. Wash the brushes with soap and water before they begin to dry.
HAPPY PAINTING ! !

Leaf Masses

First of all, observe the overall shape of the tree
- the species. And then consider the shapes of the masses of leaves.

Many trees have clumps of leaves and a general shadow area in each of
these shapes, depending on the direction of the light source.
Figure A

Although there are many ways to paint trees and you will develop your own way of painting, this lesson should help you get started in observing this particular subject matter. It is a way an artist might show sunlight on a leafy tree.

Step 1 - With a pencil, lightly draw the trunk and branches and, with the pencil, very lightly indicate the general areas where you will paint the masses of leaves.

Step 2 - Use Burnt Umber which has been lightened with a touch of Yellow Ochre to paint the trunk and indicate some branches, adding more of the Yellow Ochre to the mix for the light side of the trunk.

Step 3 - Mix the greens for the leaves.
Mix 1 - Cobalt Blue and Yellow Ochre - This is the medium shade of green used in Step 4 to indicate the masses of leaves.
Mix 2 - The light mix. Cadmium Yellow with a touch of Mix 1. A touch of white can be added as you need lighter accents.
Mix 3 - The dark, shadowy green - Add a touch of Cadmium Red Medium to Mix 1 for the dark green.
Figure B

Step 4 - With Mix 1 and a small flat brush (a small well-worn brush works well) lightly dab the leaf masses.
Figure C

Step 5 - Now you can begin applying the light green (Mix 2) where the sun will hit the leaves, and the deeper green (Mix 3) to indicate the shadow side of the leaf masses.

Learning to paint is a wonderful journey

The study of painting is learning to see the world about you - the form of things, lights and darks, and color - in an effort to express your feelings on canvas. Many artists offer teaching instruction to introduce the beginning artist to various approaches to painting and to teach the more experienced artist new ways of observing and experimenting. With practice in painting techniques the best personal approach can be developed for the individual painter in landscape painting and other subject matter.

The composition of the painting, the arrangement of the elements, is established in the initial drawing or sketch. Composition follows certain fundamental rules. These are guidelines which have to do with the relationship of the forms to each other and having a good understanding of these rules is necessary to produce an overall view which is pleasing and which expresses the original idea for the painting. The initial sketch, especially in landscape painting, should indicate light and dark tones to show the source and quality of light and the shapes of the shadow areas.

When composing the picture, the artist establishes proper perspective. To have a sense of distance and form on a flat surface, it is necessary to have a basic knowledge of perspective - an understanding of how receding lines converge at a vanishing point. Learn how to check your sketch so be sure the lines in every part of your painting go in the right directions. No matter how skillfully you apply the paint, to have a successful landscape painting, the general direction of the lines has to be correct. Many books are available for simple, basic perspective instruction, along with free online instruction.

To further develop the painting, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the color wheel and color theory basics to express the relationship of the elements and the mood of a painting. There are many good articles for color information on the internet.
